city wide art show

Jessica sat patiently for a sketch at an art show today.  She smiled for 20 minutes straight.  She loved every minute - even when her face hurt after she stopped smiling.  The artist was talented and fast - and wouldn't accept any money.  All this was only a few blocks from our house and across the street from the high school Jessica hopes to go to - Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School.

There were some funky displays...  clothing airplanes, a 12" x 14" spider web made from micro-filament which was an exact street map of New Haven, and a pyramid of very old beer cans titled "beeramid."  There was an artist who had painted Kanye West as a 17th century king, Lindsay Lohan as the Virgin Mary, and Lady Gaga as the Ganesha.  It was her attempt to show how society is wrongly worshiping or placing these people on pedestals.  Ya think?  She also had a TV that had been destroyed with artwork that had large red words "Kill Your TV."  Great idea, but not going to fly at our house.

Our favorite artist exhibit was camera obscura.  He had darkened a room by covering the walls and ceiling of a room in black fabric.  He had positioned a few 1/2 inch holes in front of the windows - the only light entering the room came from these tiny holes.  A few feet in front of the black fabric was a sheer white fabric.  The images from outside the window would be projected through the tiny holes onto the white fabric - upside down.  You could sit and watch cars pass on the street and people walk by.  It was awesome!

But if you see Mark, tell him our favorite display was his artwork.  {wink, wink}
